Survey Results on Music Video

I created an online survey where I was able to get feedback from my target audience by sending it to people through social networking sites. This allowed me to get a wide variety of feedback from different people and get different understandings and improvements for my video. 

Improvements that I have decided to make

Blog: 
- More video posts
- Make sure all posts created are in a chronological order 
- Make an animatic storyboard to make up the storyboard sketches 
- Film raw footage to show where abouts I filmed 
- Production diarys - name them to what they are talking about
- Before and after screenshots 

Digipak: 
- Maybe the first double pages aren't necessary as they don't promote the album to the audience 

Magazine Adverts:
- Album reviews needs to be linked to the correct genre - top of the pops is more appropriate than Q

Music Video: 
- First dance routine needs to be broken down even more, so the clips are more fast pace and fit to the beat of the song
- Remove any traditions which are in the dance routine

Once I had completed my draft copy of both my magazine advert and digipak I got feedback from my target audience who also where media students, therefore the feedback received was appropriate as they knew what they were talking about as they also had the knowledge.

I have created a draft copy of my digipak. I believe there are many improvements that can be made with these pages. I have stuck with the colour scheme pink throughout and the consistency of lines/crosses.

I have created a video for the behind the scenes of my music video. This was filmed by Paulo da Silva as in the video you can see that I was shooting my music video.

I have created another draft video of my music video where I finished the video with appropriate clips. I aim to colour correct and make more improvements after receiving more feedback.

I have been working on my music video for the past couple weeks and completed it. I created an account on Vimeo where I then uploaded the video in order to have a better quality image after exporting it on premier. I showed a number of friends and family my video and they all have me positive feedback. They liked that I included a narrative and a performance as this made the video much more interesting to watch as it wasn't boring due to having lots of things going on at the same time. This is because for the dance performance I have chopped up many clips two very small clips and put them together. 

I have also created a video for behind the scenes which highlights me filming my shoot. Also I finished my digi pack which also follows a pink colour scheme.

I have continued working on my music video and I am in the process of completing the whole video. I have found creating this music video quite challenging as I have many clips and kept getting confused on which clips to use and if I had already used it or not. I should have the video completed in the next few days.

As I have finished all the shooting for my music video, I have began to put together my music video using Premier. As I have had a lot of practice using this software it wasn't too hard to put together the first minute of the video, what was more time consuming was going through each clip I had and deleting the clips that I wouldn't use. 

Production Diary: Digipak Inspirations

I have been working on my digi pack and using other digi packs as inspirations. I have been using pixie lotts albums as my main inspiration. I have been using lines as my main theme through out the digi pack. This is what makes the digi pack interesting as there is a constant theme.

I have created the first 3 pages of my digi pack, I plan to do 6 pages which will also consist of a fans message. I will write this, as many fans of a artist have names I will call pixie lotts fans 'little pixies', I think this works well with the name and by having the name also meets the conventions of a pop genre

Production Diary: Existing Digipaks

I began looking at pixie lotts cd albums which I thought met all the successful pop albums. I would like to implement this album to my digi pack. I also will have a pink colour scheme going thought my products. 

I got feedback for my magazine adverts and it was to change the colours to a more bright girly colour such as pink as this would make the products more of a pop genre rather than an R&B genre. I then changed my magazine adverts and uploaded them.

Magazine Advert Landscape #1

I have created another layout for my magazine advert by producing a landscape version. I have included everything which the portrait version contains apart from the iTunes logo. Again I will be collecting feedback for this version to see if there are any improvements needed.

I completed my second magazine advert which was a landscape version of the portrait. I have used the same layout of the portrait version. All I did was make the main image much bigger and then put the same text on. I have stuck with the same colour scheme as I think it worked well, this is because she has blonde hair so the gold worked well in the magazine advert.

I have finished my magazine advert, however I will be getting feedback on it to see if there are any improvements which needed to be made to make the magazine advert as professional looking as possible in order to meet all the conventions a pop magazine advert requires. I designed this using Photoshop, I removed the background to the main image and then added a glow to make it look more effective.

After getting inspiration from the magazine advert of Ellie Goulding I finished designing my magazine advert. I created my magazine advert using Photoshop, this is because that I had to edit the images quite a bit to make it stand out as much as possible and therefore I began to do the writing also on photoshop. I downloaded a font using the website da font, this was time consuming to find the correct type of font which would suit by pop genre. I found a font which was quite big and bold. 

Production Diary: Reherasals For Dance Routine

Over the weekend I filmed parts of my music video. We all met up for reherasals for the dance routine as this would make it easier for when filming the actual video as everything will have been explained in advance and this would reduce the risks of messing anything up. Also by doing the rehearsals meants that my models would be able to practise dancing in time with the music and keeping up with eachother. I also filmed the dance rehearsals.

I was researching into more magazine advert ideas and came across an advert with ellie goulding, I liked the layout of advert and believed it met the conventions of a successful magazine advert. I also liked the colour scheme because my model is also blonde and her image is on a black background which is exactly how I plan to do my magazine advert. Also my model is also wearing a black dress in some of the photos  I took at the photoshoot which is why I thought that this magazine advert was quite useful to gain inspiration for my actual one.

This is a video showing my artists rehearsing the dance routine before shooting the actual video. This was an advantage as it avoided having any mistakes when shooting the video.

These are possible locations which I might use as my outdoor location for when my artist is going out with her friends to go to a party.

I have highlighted all the potential risks when shooting my music video and ways to avoid them. This is an advantage for before filming as this has allowed me think about my artists and making sure they do not risk anything.

I have listed all the job roles needed when shooting my music video, as only one person doing everything will be very time consuming and things wont run smoothly. I have also given a discription for each job role and who is doing what to make it clear to them before shooting.

Production Diary: Rough Edits

Over the past few days I completed a number of documents, release form, contact sheets, rough edit, proposal, call sheet, equipment list, location contract, personnel details, risk assessment. I have completed these tasks over the half term, before shooting my music video. I also created a rough edit of my magazine advert using Photoshop at home as this was the only way of creating it as I do not have access to Indesign at home.

I also got my equipment list so that I wouldnt forget anything for my shooting as this would make me fall behind as I wouldnt have anything to shoot with and I would have to reschedule for another day and it is quite difficult to meet up with my artists as they go to a different school and they do extra lessons after school which is difficult to meet up at a certain time to film.

Equipment Borrowing

When borrowing the schools equipment I had to fill out this form so that they knew exactly what I was borrowing in case anything went missing. I have also noted down the days I was going to borrow it and for how long.

Proposal

I have written out a proposal for the making of my music video as this will enable me to get the structure of my music video correct without falling behind on anything. I have also mentioned the target audience for my music video which is clearly pop fans as the song is of the pop genre. 

Rough Edits

 

This is a rough edit I did after doing my photoshoot. As I was on half term I only had access to Photoshop, therefore I created a rough edit of my magazine advert and then when I get back to school I will recreate this magazine advert using Indesign CS6. I will also ask for feedback, this will enable me to improve my magazine advert.

Contact Sheets

 

I created a contact sheet using Adobe Bridge CS3, I had access at home to create this. By creating a contact sheet allows me to see all the photos I took at my photoshoot which I could potentially use for my digipack and magazine advert.

Release Form

 

I have got each of my artists to sign a release form which is an agreement that my artists will act to the best of their ability and put as much effort in as possible, also to re-shoot any footage that is not to a high standard. 

Production Diary: Moodboard

Over the half term I created a moodboard with pictures that I used as inspiration for my photoshoot. I had researched in a few models who had previously done a photoshoot. There are quite a few shots similar to the photos I found that I took of my model at my photoshoot. I decided to use Filipa as my model for my photoshoot as I believed that she was the right person for my coursework. She isnt camera shy, she is very confident and very photogenic which was an advantage to  my coursework as this made filming her a lot more easier as she knew exactly what to do when I explained.

I took a lot of mid shots and close ups of my model at the photo shoot as this would follow Andrew Goodwins theory of close ups which would meet the conventions of a successful digi pack and magazine advert.

I watched this music video and thought that it included a lot of good camera angles and therefore I created a little moodboard with all the angles I'd like to implement into my music video.

I have created a video using Adobe Premier which highlights photo ideas for my photo shoot. I decided to create this using Premier as this will be the software which I will be using for my music video. This will give me a head start for when I begin my music video as I will already have an understanding of how things work. I have used a few transitions in the video as this will make the video more effective and draw the audience more in as more than one thing is happening. For example there is a shot where the model is crouched down and her shadow is present in the background, this photo would be good to put in my Digi pack as it will be different from having just close ups of the artist.

Production Diary: Photoshoot Date

I have booked a date for my photo shoot where I will be able to take pictures of my model for my digipack and magazine advert. These photos will be taken with a high quality camera and high quality lights in the schools shooting room. This means that my photos will be of a high quality and will look professional. 

By having my photo shoot booked for next week means I will need to look for inspirational photos that my model can implement. I plan to do this in a video with the Pixie Lott's song 'All About Tonight' playing the background. This also means I can play around with Premier and learn a few transitions which I could potentially use in my music video.

I asked my friend to give me feedback on my idea, this gave me a clear indication of improvements that I can do in order to improve my idea. Also she has gone though my blog which highlights the things I have done and to what standard. By asking for feedback gives me more ideas to improve my work and make it to a high standard. 

Artist Styling/Costume Planning

By completing this task I have thought about the costumes I would like my main artist to be wearing as this would also influence the target audience into watching the music video as they will be wearing similar clothes that teenagers now a days wear when they go out with there friends. 

Production Diary: Sketches For Digipak

During this week, I have continued with my sketches for my digipack. I have successfully completed this task by continuingly looking at existing digipacks for ideas. Due to my music video being part of the pop genre, I have noticed that pop digipacks tend to have a message from the artist to the fans. Therefore I have also included this in my sketches. Also for the sketches I have based the photos on photos that I plan to take at my photo shoot.

This is a complete sketch of my digipack, I have used a close up for my front cover as I believe by using these shots it draws the audience in. I will also take a picture of high heels and add the lyrics "I bought a new pair of shoes", this is because this is the hit single for this album and by including this highlights the single even more to the audience. 

The CD, will have a picture of either my artist or the pattern of her dress, however I still haven’t decided this. I will decide this when I do my photo shoot and put together the digipack as this will give me more of a clear idea as I will be able to see everything clearly. 

The back page of the digipack will include all the songs on Pixie Lott's album; the back of the digipack will also include key details such as websites. 

I will also include a message to the fans; this is typically found in the pop genre. This will be a message thanking the fans for all the help they have been etc. I will also include a simple picture of my artist in the digipack to emphasise her image.

Production Diary: My Blog

Over the weekend I put together a PowerPoint of the state of where my blog is up to, this clearly shows what I have and haven’t done. Also this emphasises mostly on the things I haven’t done as improvements I need to do over the next couple of weeks in order to make sure all my posts are to a high standard. By making this PowerPoint I have noticed that many of my posts have been created using PowerPoint, this lacks creativity as I know I can improve this by showing more multimedia initiative. In the next future posts I am aiming to include videos and voice over’s so that my blog has a variety of multimedia things and not just PowerPoint’s.

Production Diary: Existing Digipaks

In today's lesson, I began looking at existing digipak ideas in order to come up with an idea for my digipak. Some examples of digipaks that I came across:

These examples are examples of a pop genred digipak, these inspired me with the layout and the content included. I like the idea of having close ups on the front, this draws the audience in. Also there are colour schemes involved which aren't too bright nor too dark. For example the black and white one of Rihanna is a good example as it is black and white however continues to follow the red colour scheme of her other album Loud. 

I began to create my digipak and completed two sides of it. 

I will be using a close up image of my artist on the front page with her initial as her name. This is because she is already a well known artist. Also this is why I have only included text as the album name as the audience should be able to identify with it this way. On the back page I have included a long shot of my artist and have listed the number of songs down the side. Also included the web addresses. 

Magazine Advert Planning

 In todays lesson I continued with my magazine advert planning, I moved around with the layout and came up with ideas for what my main image will look like. For the portrait layout, it will be of a midshot/long shot of my model facing forward but with her head looking to the side. I have included my artist name on the avert as this will help to identify the artist to the audience.

 

 

I created an alternate layout for my magazine advert and included the same information for both adverts as this will be clear to the audience if they were to see the different layouts and notice the same artist. Also by creating this alternate layout, the advert will be able to be put on the side of busses as they are usually landscape. However, as this layout will be landscape the main image will be the same as the portrait, although instead of the image being of a mid shot/ long shot it will be a close up.

Production Diary: Magazine Adverts

In today’s lesson, I began to think about my magazine advert and what I would need to include in the advert in order for the audience to identify what the advert is about. I struggled to come up with a layout as I didn’t have an idea of what my main image will look like. Therefore I did a brief layout with just the information that will be needed. I also struggled to come with the album name and the hit single that will be advertised on the advert, this wasn’t a problem as I just wrote in 'album name' etc. and eventually a name will come to me and I will write it in.

I also looked at some example magazine adverts on the internet and also the ones that I had previously analysed in my research. I liked the layout for the Rihanna, Loud album as the main image is bold and bright and stands out to the audience and they are able to identify the artist straight away. I noticed that her name wasn’t included in the advert, with this advert I gained some inspiration and began to do my advert, without including the artist name. However this then meant that new audiences may not be able to know who she is which they will then struggle.

Magazine Advert Planning

This is a brief outline of how I will be having my magazine advert. I have decided to have as less writing as possible on the advert in order for the main picture to stand out as much as possible. The only writing which is going to be quite big will be the name of the album and the 'OUT NOW', this is because these are the only pieces of information which are important for the audience. 

The main image of my artist will take over the whole page, I have two image ideas. One being of a close up of the artists face with lots of make up in order to make the main image stand out to the audience so they can identify the artist straight away. The other idea is of my artist lying down of a long shot, is means that I can have the information to the side of the artist on the background and not on the actual artist. 

As many people now a days don't buy CDs I have decided to include the 'Download on iTunes', this will incourage many people to buy the CD also they will be able to listen to previews of each song compared to when buying the actual CD in store. 

By including the 5 star reviews also encourages the audience to buy the CD as they will believe that it is in fact a good album to buy and worth the money. 

I will need to include the artists name as she isn't well known to the audience, therefore I will include her name just before mentioning the album name. This will make it clear to the audience who's CD is being advertised in the magazine.

I have created an animatic storyboard, by creating this I have used my storyboard sketches and created a video with them. This allows me to visualize by product further as it allows me to have a rough idea of what the final product may look like if I follow through with my storyboard and make no changes along the way.

By drawing out a storyboard will benefit me in the long term as I will be more organised when it comes to filming my music video and this way no time will be wasted as both I and the performers will have a copy of the storyboard so they know exactly what to do.

I have finished working on my storyboard, this means that now when I shoot my music video I will always have my storyboard to reference back to in order for a successful outcome. Now that I have finished this I can start working on my magazine advert and coming up with more ideas for it and finished all my products as soon as possible. I think that drawing my storyboard has helped me develop more ideas for my video and understand more the lyrics and what my narrative could be.

I have continued with planning my music video by sketching the storyboards and included the type of shots and which lyrics go with which sketch. Again this will help me in advance as my music video will be more organised as it was planned before shooting.

I completed my first couple of sketches, I have included a narrative of the artist getting ready in her room as I think this is clearly highlighted in the lyrics of the music video. I have also included the shots which I will be using in my music video to make it easier for me when I come to shooting my video as I will have planned everything before the shooting.

Due to last lesson I was already analysing the new music video and making it my own, I continued to storyboard everything roughly onto paper. Throughout the week I was coming up with more and more ideas for my music video and also got some opinions and ideas from school friends. Some mentioned types of camera angles that would look good, for example using a crane during a dance performance. The person who told me this idea has already seen an outcome of this type of camera movement and believes it looks really good after shooting and when it’s all put together. I also watched Katy Perry’s new lyric video and liked how she uses a texting way of highlighting the lyrics, I was thinking of adding that in to my music video on a strong line which is obvious to the audience. 

I hope to have my storyboard completed this time next week. So that I can start shooting my music video as soon as possible. 

Production Diary: Different Song Choice

Over the weekend I analysed a previous student’s music video which happened to be of the same artist I am doing. I watched it through many times and then remembered that my artist said that she would prefer a song more upbeat and due to not wanting to change pop artist I began to look up more of Pixie Lott's songs and decided that I would do 'All about tonight' just like the previous student. I made this choice as I thought I could come up with a better music video as I already had some ideas. I spoke to my artist and she preferred this song choice. 

In the lesson, I began to analyse the song lyrics and coming up with different routines for each line/verse. I wrote down all the ideas that I had onto paper roughly and then added a description of how the music video would look like. I managed to do this for the first few lines of the song. I also compared the new song choice with the old song choice and believe that I made a better song choice.

Production Diary: Previous Students Work

In today’s lesson, I went through previous A2 students work and analysed a few music videos, some of which were of a high quality and some which had bad green screening. After evaluating these music videos I began to have more ideas for my music video. I've noticed how over the years the quality of the music videos has changed to better; this is due to the types of cameras and lightings used. Green screening has become a lot more successful and looks a lot more professional compared to how it was a few years back. There were some music videos which looked really pixelated and not professional due to bad green screening. I may use a bit of green screening for my music video but I am not 100% certain as I may go for a more narrative type of music video. 

Production Diary: Future Plans

Over the summer holiday I completed all my research tasks, I did this so that when I come back from the holidays I can focus more on creating my music video. By completing all these research tasks allows me to prepare more for my music video as I am thinking forward and gradually coming up with more ideas. After the holidays I will be storyboarding my music video and hopefully by October half term I will have shot my music video and got some of my planning tasks completed. I have been keeping on top of all these tasks so that at the end of the project I won’t be stressed over the amount of work needed to complete, therefore I have been completing all my tasks to the best of my ability so that I don’t need to go back on my work trying to improve each task.

This task was useful as I was able to research my target audience and see what inspires them and how they keep up to date with there artists, whether it is through social networking sites or magazines. Also how they listen to pop music and where they like to listen to it. The pop genre is not targeted at all audiences as many male audiences are not interested in this genre but of rock instead.

I have noticed that most magazine adverts do not use many words, they are more focused on the main image which will attract the audience to see the advert and then read the small print.

By completing this task I have thought about my music video and what I will be using to shoot it, I have chosen this equipment as the outcome is always of a high quality which will make my music video as professional as possible. I have also chosen the programmes I will use to edit my music video, and each software will focus on different parts of the music video. For example the photos for my digipack will be edited using Adobe Photoshop and my music video on Adobe Premier Pro.

By completing this task, allows me to have more knowledge on my target audience as I will be able to make sure I include the right things in my music video. For example fashion, I will stick to the influences of my target audience as some people look up to there artists and idolise them. Technology is a huge influence in the music industry as most artists have social networking sites in which they communicate to there target audience. Many artists also have a clothes range in shops such as River Island, for example Rihanna has a clothes range and many of her target audience wears her fashion as they want to be just like her.

Feedback from audience on my idea

Filipa: I am really looking forward to be part of Juliana's music video. I feel confident with the ideas she has come up with and I am also looking forward to be doing a dance performance throughout. I love making up dance routines to current and old music therefore I'll enjoy being part of her music video. I really like the idea she has and the way she wants to shoot the video, with different camera angles to emphasise the lyrics especially using the close ups which are also found in the original music video. I have also been looking at music videos to gain more ideas for the performance which will work with the song Juliana has chosen. This will also allow me to be prepared for the actual video as I will have some routines to do which will be good in the video. Finally I also like the idea of basing the music video performance based and at the beginning and at the end having a narrative. However I think she needs to include a boy in the narrative as this will enable the audience to relate to the lyrics more. 

I have got feedback from my artist, which was positive with good feedback as she also contributed with some ideas on what she thinks will also make the music video successful. By getting feedback allows me to make sure my music video is as successful as possible.

Production Diary: Song Choice

Having chosen the song for my music video I began to analyse bit of the music video which I liked. The pictures above are pictures taken from the music video which I thought looked really effective and I will try to implement in my music video. Again I will stick to a performance in my music video and most likely have my artist wearing black against a black wall behind her as this look really effective and brings her out more. I also like how in this music video there are a variety of camera shots which also make the music video more appealing to the target audience as this also includes a lot of close ups. 

Research into the artist - Pixie Lott

I have chosen to do a music video by Pixie Lott, as she is a pop singer with a great success. By researching Pixie I have found out a lot about her background and how she became a singer and who influenced her to become a singer and a success. She has many albums and has won many awards and been nominated at awards ceromonys such as BRIT Awards.

What is a Digipack

By completing this task I have learnt about digipacks and from the existing digipacks I have gained some ideas for when I create my digipack for my artist. I will be using close ups of the artist as this targets the audience when they see the digipack and due to basing my music video in the pop genre I will have a colourful digipack as this is one of the conventions of pop music videos as they are usually lively  with a happy atmosphere. 

Production Diary: Plans For My Music Video

Over this past week I have been talking to a couple of friends who are interested in being in my music video. I have chosen Filipa to be in my main artist due to her attitude towards music, this is because she is a dancer therefore she is comfortable performing in front of people and isn’t camera shy.

I am thinking of doing a dance routine in my music video and due to Filipa being in dance lessons, she has friends who will also be interested in taking part. When I have chosen my song, we will be able to begin to come up with a dance routine that will fit in well with the song.

I have been looking for which costumes will look effective in a music video and I have come across a trail dress which will look good blowing in the wind when she’s singing and walking around. 

I have also begun to research existing music labels and have learnt that there are major and independent music label companies, and that there are many major companies that I wouldn’t have thought was a music label.

By completing this task I learnt what a record label is and what it was used for. I found out that record labels are either major or independent and with major labels they are quite well known to the audience already as they are of a big company compared to the independents. However some artists just use the internet to target the audience as this doesn't cost them and it is spread quickly around letting there target audience aware of new things. 

Production Diary: Decision Made

After a lot of thinking I have finally decided what music genre to do, I will be basing my music video around the pop genre. I have chosen this genre as I have a lot of interest for the artists in this industry which are also really well known. Another reason is because my friend accepted to be in my music video and her genre of dance is hip hop which she can then implement in the music video and adapt well. Having chosen this genre I completed another research task which was to do some research in the pop industry.
